Just a quick note: If you’re testing old chips regularly you might want to have a look at the Retro Chip Tester Professional!
(This article isn’t sponsored, I’m just amazed by this device 🙂 )
PS: The first test was successful, woohoo!
Housing
I put the RCT in a fancy housing:
You can get the housing at Mouser. But you have to customize it yourself 🙂
I also replaced the LCD with an OLED.
The ports and switches on the backside are mounted with several adapters und pcbs:
The SD card pcb was glued in place with a 3D printed block underneath to support it. That’s a bit unfortunate, but the pcb itself has no mounting holes.
Almost completed my build. I’m stuck on a panel mount ISP and SD card to mount the rear plate. Do you have any 3D print files for these ?
Hey there! I updated the article. I used a pcb for the ISP and a crude 3D print for the SD card slot.
That’s great thank you although I’ve found some solutions with the help of some friends. I’d like to share with you pictures of my build. How might I contact you ?
Woah, sounds interesting! You can reach me at jensma@jensma.de.
You have Mail !
Hello again, I’m busy building this. Does your enable ISP switch just disconnect/kill VCC to the Screen ?
Thanks !
Hey there! If I remember correctly the ISP switch connects/disconnetcs power to the SD card module. Enabling the sd card module blocks the ISP automatically from working.
Thank you. I see it now in the docs just as you said. I’m looking for a panel mount header for the ISP only found a 10pm design on thingiverse. Have you designed anything?
can i ask you where you bought that LCD display? that thing in orange.
If I’m not mistaken it was one of these displays:

I changed it for an oled later on because of the poor viewing angle
Where did you get that white top plate from? (that has written Retro chip tester pro)
Oh! These are just pcbs I had manufactured. Unfortunatly I just used parts I had lying around, so I can’t tell you which connectors and plugs I exactly used. Maybe the kicad priject files are of any help for you? https://www.jensma.de/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/rct.zip
How much would it cost to order that modified case directly from you? (like you have made it)
Hey there!
Thanks for your interest! Unfortunatley I can’t offer to make a case for you. But you can order it from Mouser and place your own panels into it, you don’t have to cut or modify anything.
